SF: EQxD "U" Workshop #4 - Architecture And...

Based on the results of the Equity in Architecture Survey, less than 50% of male and female respondents were satisfied with their current job situation.  In the same question, a large number responded that they were looking or open to new opportunities within the profession as well as alternative career paths.  Architecture AND... allows us the forum to evaluate traditional models of practice in comparison to emerging models that expand the exploration of design as an addition to practice; partnerships with clients and allied partners, integrated project delivery with multidisciplinary teams, recapturing talent with diverse skills and increased engagement in the workplace. Cultivating Architectural practice to be expansive, innovative, meaningful and influential explores a new way to increase job satisfaction, improve talent retention and sustainability of the profession.

What does Architectural practice look like 20 years from now and what are the potential in expanding the spectrum and adaptation of services that we can provide; reinforcing the value proposition of design as a societal necessity? Developing a diverse practice that straddles several related fields can be lucrative from both a business and creative standpoint. How can a multidisciplinary practice broaden our creative thinking when times are prosperous and deplete the potential risks of volatile building market? What kinds of divergent/convergent work make sense for architects and architecture firms to take on that will promote resiliency and relevance into the future?

Join us on Thursday, October 22nd 6pm-8:30pm for EQxD "U" Architecture AND, the last (and most provocative) workshop discussion of the EQxD Series at AIASF.  We will feature 4 diverse panelists from the AIASF community that are actively engaged in multidisciplinary practice models.  The second half of the workshop will feature a highly interactive "gamestorming" style design thinking exercise that will explore the possibilities of engage in professional practice in a multidisciplinary approach.

SF: EQxD "U" Workshop #2 - What's Flex got to do with Success?

What's Flex Got to do with Success? Win-Win Strategies for Work/Life Flexibility

The 2nd EQxD "U" Workshop - What's Flex Got to Do With It? will explore the complexities of making work and life "work" together to fulfill your maximum potential and enjoying the journey along the way.

Inspired by Stew Friedman's book, Leading the Life you want, this workshop will provide a new perspective on how to navigate between the aspects of "life"; work, life, self, and community. Finding a way to achieve "four way wins" also impacts the bottom line by: providing access to a wider talent pool; increasing employee satisfaction, engagement and productivity; and reducing costly employee turnover.

Meanwhile, the architectural profession, driven by the studio culture of academia, commonly demands long, and often unpredictable, hours spent in the office. In this workshop, we will discuss the 3rd rail topics of flex time vs. traditional hours, taking a leave of absence, how to address bias towards those who need or choose to have flexibility of work schedules. We will explore successful strategies for both firm leaders and employees to develop infrastructure that promotes efficiency, balance and performance over the “Culture of Busy”.

MEET THE PANELISTS!

Our panel will feature 4 design professionals from diverse backgrounds; at various stages of personal and professional development. All 4 share their insights on the constant dance between work, life and everything in between. Following a summary of key survey findings on work life flexibility and caregiving, we will engage the panelists in an interactive Q&A. The second half of the session will leverage break-out groups to dive deep and propose actionable solutions to the work life flexibility challenges discussed.

#SEEMEJOINME

Let's drive out inequality and celebrate all our construction industry talent
#INTERNATIONALWOMENSDAY

The construction industry plays a vital role in the world’s economy, but has a global reputation as a place where mainly men succeed.

To coincide with International Women’s Day on 8 March 2015, RIBA has launched the #SeeMeJoinMe campaign to celebrate and support a more diverse and inclusive construction industry.

The UK construction industry employs more than 2.5 million people. Women make up just 11% of the sector, with a mere 1.2% working in manual labour trades.

In Europe, the construction industry employs around 14 million people (9.5% of employment) yet most (88%) of the people employed in the sector are male.

Of the 7.1 million Americans employed in construction-related occupations, only 2.6% are women.

The industry needs collectively to take positive steps to drive out inequality, inspire and celebrate all our talent.

We are asking construction professionals around the world - from bricklayers and architects to engineers and plumbers - to make a stand, take a selfie, add their job title and show our young women, parents and teachers that careers in construction are not off-limits to girls.

HOW TO SHOW YOUR SUPPORT:

  1. Tweet a few words about why creating a more equal industry matters along with an image of yourself at work and your job title - don't forget the hashtag #SeeMeJoinMe
  2. Sign up to our campaign Thunderclap
  3. Rally your friends and colleagues working in the construction industry around the world to do the same.
  4. On International Women’s Day on 8 March 2015 at 9am, watch as everyone's messages are simultaneously shared on social media around the world.

Feminism and Architecture (Susana Torre) Discussion

Please join us for this AIASF and OWA Joint Event hosted at MKTHINK.

Everybody is welcome to this OWA Book Circle event.

(By Jean Nilsson from Nov/Dec OWA Newsletter)

February 11, 2015, the OWA Book Circle along with members of the AIASF EQxD: The Missing 32% Project invite you to a round-table discussion with excerpts of the video of Torre's address that is available on The Architectural League of New York's website. We ask you to view the video beforehand because it is so full of ideas, or you can read the lecture, which is published on Parlour's website in three parts: Feminism in ArchitectureTokenism, and Where to Next?

Torre reflects on the influence that feminism has had on the architecture profession, discusses six significant ways that feminist ideas have contributed to changing architecture and planning (see article in our last issue) and outlines her ideas on how to move forward. What are new agendas for feminism and architecture?

"Today, when we talk about 'women in architecture' we usually focus not on discourse, but on the unfulfilled agendas of salary parity and equal access to opportunities for retention or promotion, or on the difficulty of reconciling the demands of a very exacting profession with those (no less time-consuming) of child-rearing and the production of domestic life, as most women still bear the greater responsibility for both."

Torre gives several suggestions: She reminds us that "the creation of discourse is fundamental for changing a discipline." She urges institutions such as AIA to "lead in the effort to retain and promote the advancement of women in the profession" (as the AIASF Missing 32% committee has done, article above). She urges scholars to continue "redefining the criteria for inscribing the work of women into history, challenging the criteria approved by the male critical establishment" (as OWA members Inge Horton and Sandhya Sood do; see articles below). Torre mentions ArchiteXX.org, a group in New York, but doesn’t say what we in a group like OWA might do. When OWA Book Circle member Inge Horton wrote to Susana Torre about our group's interest in her lecture, she responded right away that she would be interested in continuing a discourse on this important part of architecture with us.

We will view parts and discuss the video about Feminism and Architecture by Susana Torre  Please look at the VIDEO and the recommended readings below before this event for a good discussion.

SF: EQxD "U" Workshop #3 - Negotiation is your Power Tool

Based on our survey findings, less than 35% of all respondents negotiated their salaries after receiving an unsatisfactory offer. How can we become more effective negotiators for ourselves, our firms, and for the architectural profession-at-large?

There are many situations and types of negotiation — and ultimately it breaks down to communication styles and the choices we make when we engage in these situations. In this workshop, you will learn HOW to negotiate by understanding the key differences between key negotiation mindsets and then practicing

Join us Thursday, August 13th, 6pm-8:30pm for the most anticipated workshop of the EQxD series. We expect to sell out for this event, so register early. This session will feature a panel of negotiation experts from the AEC community followed by key strategies. Then, you will engage in role play scenarios of real life situations to practice effective outcomes for your next performance review, compensation discussion, contracts with your clients, and essential strategies to stand up to competitive types.

SF: EQxD "U" Workshop 1 Hiring & Retention - Job "Satisfaction"

Satisfaction: Workplace Innovations to Attract, Develop and Keep Talent.

What is Satisfaction? What are the factors surrounding talent retention in firms? Is it work culture or diverse teams? Working on good design projects? Having a Transparent Promotion Policy? Role models in leadership positions? High salary? Meaningful work?

While nearly half of today’s graduates from architecture programs are women, they make up only 25% of practitioners, and 17% of partners or principals in architecture firms. In the Hiring & Retention, we will examine survey results on the initial employment and retention of architectural professionals as it relates to gender equity. We will highlight “pinch points” around major career and life milestones at which women are more likely to leave a firm.  Our research has shown that those who believe that their daily work is aligned with long-term career goals are more likely to be satisfied with their jobs, and less likely to be looking for new employment opportunities.

This workshop will further explore what people need in the short term (ie.,happiness) vs. what they truly need for a meaningful career (that they may not even realize yet). We will have 3 feature panelists from various Bay Area firms to review our early survey findings and discuss their work culture as it relates to job satisfaction and retention.

This will be followed by a series of small group exercises, using design thinking tools, to generate strategies for transforming workplace culture in order to increase sponsorship/mentorship opportunities, provide fair and unbiased criteria for advancement, counter tendencies of in-group favoritism, promote diversity in teams, and to develop meaningful roles for all employees.

Workshop Agenda

PRINCIPLED DESIGN: A Discussion with Women in Practice

Saturday December 6, 2014, 3:00-4:30 pm  @ Miami Center for Architecture & Design

100 NE 1st Ave, Miami, FL, in the Downtown Arts District

There is a great diversity in range of how architecture is practiced. What principles and values, such as aesthetic or social ones, underpin these different practices? In the field of urban planning, theorists including Henry Mayhew, Lewis Mumford, Herbert Gans, and Jane Jacobs, have integrated moral principles into urban planning, such as the aim to foster inclusive and equitable societies. This panel assembles women who practice architecture to discuss what values they hold dear, and how these principles, if at all, frame their approach to design, implementation and practice.

Emerging from discussions about the inclusion of women in design professions, this panel builds upon related dialogues. In March 2013, Women in Design launched a Petition to the Pritzker Architecture Prize to recognize Denise Scott Brown for her role in the 1991 Prize. The Missing 32% Project is an initiative that investigates why there is a leaky pipeline for women in architecture professions. In 2014, Julia Morgan became the first woman to receive the AIA Gold Medal posthumously, honoring her prolific practice that spanned several decades during the first half of the 20th Century. This panel was conceived by Caroline James and Jaya Kader, and advised by Denise Scott Brown.

Background: In the United States women represent nearly 50 percent of students enrolled in architecture programs but only 18 percent of licensed architects. The Missing 32% Project seeks to find out what causes an equity imbalance in the Architecture profession.

Rosa will present the findings from the 2014 Equity in Architecture survey which was just presented at the Equity by Design Symposium. The survey results will explore issues of professional advancement, pursuit of licensure, and how office environments impact retention. They seek to explore the questions: “What are the key factors that hinder advancement and create pinch points? Why do so few women advance to ownership and senior leadership positions in large firms? And, what measures could be taken to promote Equity in Architecture as it relates to hiring, retention, professional growth, leadership, meaning and influence?”
